The November 2 event can fill buses with enough donations to last a year
Help a child in need this holiday season by stuffing a bus with donations. That’s the message Riverside Transit Agency (RTA) and Operation SafeHouse is giving in the days leading up to their annual gift-giving, bus-packing event on Thursday, November 2.
For the 10th year in a row, RTA and Operation SafeHouse are teaming up for the annual “Stuff the Bus” event, which aims to fill buses to capacity with donated non-perishable food, linens, toiletries and other items for the non-profit group that helps at-risk and in-crisis youth.
This year’s event will take place at several locations across the region from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted aboard RTA buses at the Riverside County Administration Center, 4080 Lemon St. (1 p.m.), Riverside City Hall, 3900 Main St. (2 p.m.), CarMax at Riverside Auto Center, 7980 Auto Dr. (3 p.m.), Kaiser Permanente, 10800 Magnolia Ave. (3:45 p.m.), and Riverside Target, 3520 Tyler St. (4 - 7 p.m.).
The donated items are distributed to SafeHouse’s emergency shelters and transitional living programs in Riverside and Thousand Palms. Last year’s event produced more than 10,000 donated items, ranging from brooms and brushes to dish soap and shaving cream. The donations kept inventory shelves stocked throughout the year.
“These donations will bring hope and joy to thousands of local children,” said RTA Chair of the Board Linda Krupa. “This is a great opportunity to support your community and help those who need it the most.”
RTA also partners with SafeHouse for the Safe Place program, which allow teens in crisis to board any RTA bus and be taken to the SafeHouse shelter in Riverside.
Fonda McGensy, the Safe Place program director, said the event is a great opportunity for members of the community to give to a worthy cause.
“This event is one of the easiest ways to make a major difference in a child’s life,” McGensy said. “Plus, the bus is a convenient drop-off point. You don’t need to carry donations into a building; you just drive in and put it in the bus.”
