Martin Luther King High School opened in 1999 and it was the first high school to be built in Riverside since 1973. By the time of its first graduating class in 2002, it was one of 12 schools in the region honored by the Siemens Foundation for having one of the most extensive, rigorous and promising Advanced Placement math, science, and computer science course offerings. It was recognized as a California Distinguished School in 2005 and 2009. Notable graduates include NBA players Kawhi Leonard and Tony Snell, as well as NFL kicker Robert Malone.
