The
following actions were taken
during the RTA’s Board of
Directors monthly meeting
on Thursday, April 26, 2007:
A
presentation to Board members
showed a growing number of
UC Riverside students taking
advantage of free rides on
RTA buses. Ridership from
the U-Pass program, which
allows UCR students with valid
identi•cation to ride RTA
buses for free, has jumped
10 percent since October.
The majority of students are
riding the Crest Cruiser trolley,
which has experienced a 100
percent ridership burst since
service began last fall.
Board
members approved the purchase
of seven, 12-passenger vehicles
for use on the Agency's Dial-A-Ride
service. The vehicles, which
can accommodate three wheelchair
positions, will help the Agency
keep up with service demands.
Additionally, Board members
approved the purchase of four,
26-passenger vehicles for
•xed-route operations.
Board
members approved funding for
taxi services during Fiscal
Year 2008 to assist with the
Agency's Dial-A-Ride program.
Since 2004, RTA has relied
on taxicabs to transport senior
citizens and persons with
disabilities who would otherwise
be denied service due to capacity
restraints on regular Dial-A-Ride
vehicles. Dial-A-Ride's ridership
is expected to increase roughly
eight percent between •scal
years 2007 and 2008. The funding
is contingent on approval
of RTA's proposed budget by
the RTA Board.
Board
members authorized the installation
of video surveillance systems
for 71 Dial-A-Ride vehicles.
The on-board security system,
which will debut aboard vehicles
for seniors and persons with
disabilities, is comprised
of two cameras mounted on
the windshield to capture
video and audio inside and
outside the vehicle. A built-in
wireless modem will automatically
upload data and video to
a server, allowing RTA to
review video at any time.
The
next Board meeting will be
held on Thursday, May 24 at
2 p.m.
