RIVERSIDE, CA — March 15, 2010 — Beginning today, middle students in the Moreno Valley Unified School District can compete in an art contest that highlights how public transportation helps the environment.
The Moreno Valley/Perris Transportation NOW, a grassroots coalition dedicated to promoting public transportation, has launched its “Air Aware” contest at Badger Springs, Landmark, Mountain View, Sunnymead and Vista Heights middle schools. Middle school students registered in the King Hall program are also encouraged to participate. Up to 20 students per campus are invited to enter the contest. Submissions will be accepted through April 12 and winners will be announced at the Moreno Valley City Council meeting on April 27.
“This is a truly unique opportunity for Moreno Valley students to showcase their artistic talents,” said Eric Wells, Chairman of the Moreno Valley/Perris Transportation NOW chapter.
Participating students will receive a free 7-Day Pass, which they can use to ride RTA’s eco-friendly buses and experience first-hand the benefits of public transit. Artwork must demonstrate the environmental benefits of RTA bus travel and may be submitted as sculpture, paintings, sketches, digital images, video and audio. The first-place winner will receive a $250 gift certificate to the Moreno Valley Mall and an RTA 30-Day Pass. The second-place winner gets a $100 gift certificate and an RTA 7-Day Pass and third-place takes home a $50 gift certificate and an RTA Day Pass.
“This contest is an ideal way for students to learn about the positive impact they have on the environment by riding the bus,” said RTA Chairman of the Board Jeff Comerchero.
Moreno Valley Mayor Bonnie Flickinger, who is also a Transportation NOW member and RTA Board member, said the contest has the potential to turn students into lifelong users of public transportation.
“Educating the youth has always been a focus of this Transportation NOW chapter,” Flickinger said. “We are committed to continuing our proud tradition, and ensuring that bus and rail usage remains an integral part of this region for years to come.”
