RTA
Offers Free Passes, Assistance
to Hurricane Katrina Evacuees
The
Riverside Transit Agency (RTA)
announced today that it will
provide free transportation
to families and individuals
arriving to the Inland area
in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
“RTA
will do everything in its power
to get these displaced Gulf
Coast residents on a path to
recovery,” RTA Chair Jim Ayres
said. “We hope that free transportation
will give evacuees the opportunity
to access medical services,
employment, schooling, and other
activities to pull their lives
back together.”
During
a special meeting, RTA’s executive
committee of the board agreed
to provide 500, 31-day general
passes at no charge to the evacuees.
The agency is prepared to extend
the offer if more than 500 passes
are needed.
In
addition to offering free monthly
passes, RTA’s employees are
also participating at the Riverside
County Hurricane Victims Assistance
Center, which is helping evacuees
living throughout the area with
medical screening, shelter,
job placement, child care and
other services.
On
Thursday, RTA’s participation
will take another turn when
the agency’s Flag Buses transport
more than 100 California Highway
Patrol offi cers from Riverside’s
Ben Clark Training Center to
March Air Reserve Base. Once
at the base, the offi cers will
board a plane for the Gulf Coast
to assist in hurricane relief
efforts.
The
Riverside Transit Agency provides
public transportation for Western
Riverside County, operating
38 fi xed routes, 5 commuter
routes and 15 demand response
services. RTA’s service area
spans 2,500 square miles, the
second largest in the nation.
