RIVERSIDE, CA — (May, 2, 2008) — The Riverside Transit Agency’s (RTA) Board of Directors has unanimously elected Corona Councilmember Karen Spiegel to take leadership of the 18-member governing board.
As chairman, Spiegel will be responsible for leading the RTA Board in setting policy, guiding Agency priorities, conducting the Agency’s monthly Board meetings and representing RTA during public events.
“I am honored to be chosen by my fellow board members for this important position,” Spiegel said. “I am proud of the accomplishments of this governing board, and I am committed to its continued success.”
Board members also elected Councilmember Jeff Comerchero of Temecula as the new first vice chairman. A new second vice chairman will be selected by a nominating committee at a future date.
Chairman Spiegel has served on the RTA Board since 2002. She is actively involved on various Agency committees and is a member of the Corona/Norco/District 2 Transportation NOW chapter. A 24-year resident of Corona, Spiegel served as mayor in 2006 and is involved in numerous business, civic and community activities.
Spiegel’s appointment comes during a productive period for RTA, which is experiencing strong ridership, especially on its CommuterLink express routes, which have grown 18 percent compared to this time last year. The Agency is also in the process of building new transit centers, equipping its CommuterLink buses with free wireless Internet and satellite television, and upgrading major bus stops with SmartStop computerized panels that display real-time bus arrival information.
The Riverside Transit Agency provides public transportation for Western Riverside County, operating 39 fixed routes, 7 commuter routes and 15 demand response services. RTA’s service area spans 2,500 square miles, the second-largest in the nation.
