Riverside
Transit Agency Reaches Goal of
No Lost Work Days
The
Riverside Transit Agency (RTA)
has reached a signifi cant milestone,
thanks to a stepped-up effort
to improve
employee safety.
This
week, RTA celebrates the fact
that none of its 350-plus employees
has missed a full day of work
due to an on-the-job injury
from Workers Compensation claims
fi led in Fiscal Year 2005,
which ran from July 1, 2004
to June 30, 2005. RTA staff
worked diligently to increase
employee understanding of Workers
Compensation and recently launched
a loss-prevention committee
to oversee and promote safety
initiatives.
“All
this hard work has really paid
off,” RTA chairman Jim Ayres
said. “This isn’t an easy goal
for any business to reach, but
all the credit goes to RTA’s
employees who are taking great
pride in their jobs. They are
really the ones who should be
commended.”
Zero
missed days is a considerable
achievement, considering that
during Fiscal Year 2003, RTA
employees missed a collective
2,190 days of work due to Workers
Compensation claims. During
Fiscal Year 2004, RTA employees
missed 1,669 days due to such
claims.
Workers
Compensation covers employee
medical expenses and lost wages
if they are hurt in the course
of doing work-related activities.
RTA paid $1.4 million in Workers
Compensation benefi ts during
Fiscal Year 2004. When an employee
misses work due to an injury,
RTA is often required to pay
for a part-time replacement
and additional insurance costs.
Estimated savings to RTA for
no lost work days during Fiscal
Year 2005 is $850,000.
The
Riverside Transit Agency provides
public transportation for Western
Riverside County, operating
38 fi xed routes, 5 commuter
routes and 15 demand response
services. RTA’s service area
spans 2,500 square miles, the
second largest in the nation.
