RIVERSIDE, CA — JULY 3, 2006

EXHIBITION FOCUSES ON REGION’S YOUNG ARTISTS
Dozens of Young Artists Participate in Contest Celebrating Public Transit

Dozens of students who used public buses as inspiration for their art will be honored next week at an exhibition designed to showcase budding artistic talents.

On Thursday, July 6, the Riverside Transit Agency (RTA) and Riverside Art Museum will honor the top four finalists of the month-long contest by displaying their artwork at Division 9 Gallery, 3850 Lemon Street in downtown Riverside. The event begins at 6 p.m. Other top entries will be available for public viewing aboard RTA’s Orange Blossom Express, which will be parked outside the studio.

Nearly 80 students from 41 elementary, middle and high schools across Western Riverside County participated in the inaugural contest. The theme was “Connecting People and Culture,” and the winning pictures, drawings and illustrations best depicted public transportation in the community.

“We were extremely impressed with the outstanding quality of the winning designs,” said Daniel Foster, the museum’s executive director. “This is a great collaboration between RTA, the Riverside Art Museum, and young artists in our community.”

The winning design belonged to Norte Vista High School’s Mayuli Lemus who will receive a $150 savings bond for her colorful drawing entitled “Ride on the Wings of RTA.” Mayuli’s depiction of a winged RTA bus will also be featured on the cover of an upcoming RTA Ride Guide.
Other finalists were Riverside Christian Elementary School’s Kyra Lopez, Villegas Middle School’s Elizabeth Naameh and Norte Vista High School’s Michael Thorn. Those students will each receive $50 savings bonds.

The Riverside Transit Agency provides public transportation for Western Riverside County, operating 38 fi xed routes, 5 commuter routes and 15 demand response services. RTA’s service area spans 2,500 square miles, the second-largest in the nation.
