Federal
Money Earmarked For New Transit
Centers
Rep. Ken Calvert’s efforts
instrumental in bill’s passage
The
construction of new transit centers
in Riverside and Corona has taken
a major step forward thanks to
President Bush’s approval of a
federal appropriations bill that
sets aside more than $1.2 million
for the projects.
Signed
by President Bush last week, the
transportation appropriations
bill known as HR 3058 will provide
money to help build the two facilities
expected to open in Riverside
and Corona by 2007.
“These
funds will help RTA maintain its
goal of building facilities that
this region can be proud of,”
said RTA Chairman Jim Ayres.
The
new Riverside transit center would
be roughly the same size as the
existing one, with six to eight
bays for buses. The Corona transit
center is designed to include
covered plazas, park-and-ride
areas and possibly retail shops.
Because the facilities are expected
to open near Metrolink stations,
they will provide an added service
by easing connections between
buses and Metrolink trains.
The
bill sets aside $500,000 for the
Corona Transit Center and $750,000
for the Riverside Transit Center.
It also earmarks millions of dollars
for various transportation and
construction projects across the
region.
Rep.
Ken Calvert (R-Corona) made the
request for funding of the two
transit centers.
“The
improvements to the transit centers
are critical for our region and
growth,” he said. “I will continue
to work with RTA to improve our
regional transportation system.”
The
Riverside Transit Agency provides
public transportation for Western
Riverside County, operating 38
fixed routes, 5 commuter routes
and 15 demand response services.
RTA’s service area spans 2,500
square miles, the second-largest
in the nation. For bus route and
