Local
and regional transportation
leaders will preside next week
over the opening of a new alternative
fueling station that will power
more than 100 Riverside Transit
Agency (RTA) buses and help
promote alternative-fuel usage
across the Inland area.
The
$1.5 million station, funded
by a combination of federal
and local money, is part of
a growing network of such alternative
fueling stations across California.
The station, at RTA’s Third
Street headquarters in Riverside,
will provide compressed natural
gas (CNG) to fuel RTA’s growing
fl eet of public buses and fuel
vehicles from government agencies
across the Inland area. Crews
have been working on the new
equipment for more than three
months.
RTA
switched its entire fl eet to
CNG fuel in 2001 in order to
meet more strict air-quality
standards. The new state-of-the-art
facility, which will debut Oct.
27, is capable of fueling a
bus in about fi ve minutes.
That’s a major improvement from
the Agency’s current CNG fueling
station, which is a decade old
and fuels a vehicle in about
12 minutes. Less fueling time
means more productivity among
those RTA employees who fuel,
maintain and clean the buses
every night.
“Reducing
air pollution is a major priority
at RTA, and we are pleased to
be part of the campaign for
tougher air-pollution standards,”
said RTA Chairman Jim Ayres.
“This is a great opportunity
for RTA to show its commitment
to cleaner air.”
The
Riverside Transit Agency provides
public transportation for Western
Riverside County, operating
38 fi xed routes, 5 commuter
routes and 15 demand response
services. RTA’s service area
spans 2,500 square miles, the
second-largest in the nation.
